For my Independent Study in Digital Humanities, I created a WordPress blog to discuss inclusivity in gaming, gaming press, representation on screen, and actual gameplay and controls. This was particularly interesting to me because it came after GamerGate, which brought discussions and inclusivity I gaming to the forefront.
I valued this experience a lot because it let me exercise my DH muscles and to create new analysis on an alternative text form (video games). I found the newness of game analysis and game studies, both exciting and a bit frustrating. I felt that at times I could have benefited from more of a theoretical foundation in game studies that wasn’t there or didn’t touch on things around gaming that I was interested in, such as specific gaming subcultures and community formations around video game YouTube videos.
